Cat Farris draws in a simple, energetic, cartoon-like style with a color palette of yellows and greens.

Cat: I turned 45 this year and that means it’s time for a colonoscopy! To convince you to get one too, I share my experience in comic style for hours. Is…

Image: A cat points to floating prescription bottles, toilet paper, a 16-ounce bottle of liquid, and a container of goo.

Title: Baby’s first colonoscopy

Narration: The first step is the best known: Preparation! Honestly, in my opinion, the worst part of the whole thing.

Image: A tiny cat rests in a 16-ounce container.

Narration:
-A few days before you will start a low fiber diet. Fibrous foods can stick to the inside of the colon.
-The day before you will be limited to clear liquids only.
-The night before you will start taking your “preparation”. It is a laxative, usually mixed with a powder or liquid.

You will also be asked to drink more fluids to help you pass stool!

Cat: Your doctor will choose the right preparation for you, so make sure you follow their instructions to the letter!

Title: Day 1: Begin preparation
Caption: 9 am

Cat sleepily looks at her coffee machine with a steaming cup in her hand.

Cat: Thank goodness, black coffee counts as a clear liquid.

The cat lifts a large, clear container into the air containing a yellow substance.

Narration: I’m excited to try the pineapple jelly!

Narration: It’s…

Cat gives a disappointed thumbs up as she eats a bowl of Jell-O.

Narration: …Good!

Subtitle: 9:30 am

Can and her husband Ron are walking their greyhound dog, Coco.

Cat: I want to do my physical training today, but I can’t eat anything.

Ron: You’ll become Hungarian.

Title: 10 am

Garlic, ginger and cilantro are placed in a pot with liquid, which then goes into a thermos.

Narration: Extras simmered in my chicken broth. Then I strained it well into my insulated bottle!

Page 2
Narration: I mixed my first bottle of brew with lemon-lime gatorade.

Both a prescription bottle and a Gatorade bottle pour their contents into a 16 oz glass.

Narration: Put it on the refrigerator at 4 pm and set my alarm.

Your phone shows that an alarm is set.

Caption: 12 pm, lunch

Ron and Cat sit at a table together with their lunches. Ron happily eats his noodle soup while Cat looks hurt as she eats her lemon Jell-O.

The phone resting on the table plays a recording of them that says: More than an ordinary life, Bob Fosse feared an ordinary death.

Subtitle: 2 p.m.

The cat radiates frustration.

Cat: I’m so hungry I’m almost looking for real food!

Subtitle: 2 pm – 3:59 pm
Cat works at her desk with headphones in her ears. He draws with one hand on the screen of his Cintiq and with the other on the keyboard of his laptop.

Cat thinks: Drawing is the only thing keeping me from accidentally eating solids.

His stomach gurgles and growls.

Caption: 4 p.m.

Cat’s phone alarm goes off “Brass monkey! That funky monkey!”

Narration: First brew bottle, LFG!

Cat jumps up and raises her fist in determination.

Narration: Great move, except now I’m laughing too hard to drink!

Ron dances in the background as she leans over the kitchen counter, laughing, as her drink goes undrunk and the phone continues to play “Brass Monkey.”

Narration: Prepare a drink LET’S GO!

The cat takes a big, nasty sip through a straw.

With Xes over her eyes, she moans: Oh gods, it’s so salty but it also tastes like chemicals…

Page 3
Subtitle: Chug A Lug!

Cat takes a long, long sip through her straw.

Narration: The blast of cold, unpleasant liquid hits my stomach and…

Cat, looking dazed, moans, “Uhhh…”

The cat’s face is simplified into an ugly caricature.

Narration: Varta?

A huge burp erupts from Cat’s mouth with a “BRAAAAAP!”

Cat: Ugh! But ehh…

He looks wearily at the glass, which is only half-made.

Narration: New strategy of holding your breath, taking prep, then taking Gatorade. The straw that broke the camel’s back had to go…

Cat looks determined with a brew glass in one hand and a bottle of Gatorade in the other.

Narration: Take me to the goal!

Narration: Unfortunately, drinking so much cold liquid caused my body temperature to drop. But now I still need to drink 32 more ounces of clear liquid in an hour. I shelter and drink while I draw and shiver.

Cat goes back to work at her desk, but this time bundled up in layers.

Title: One hour later…

Caption: 6 pm – 10 pm

The dog Coco looks confused at the bathroom door, which has a sign that says: “Occupied by ????” in it.

Cat voice through the door: BA-HAHAHAAAA!! It’s like pee but it comes out of my butt!

Narration: I laughed at every poop. It was like food poisoning but without the pain.

Narration: The next day. I’m so hungry and tired.

Cat wakes up in bed next to Ron, who is still sleeping. Her phone alarm rings on the nightstand next to her. Coco sleeps on the floor.

Narration: Prepare bottle #2 in 35 min.

Subtitle: 7:35 am

Narration: Yesterday I read that it is better to take a sip of the preparation and not a drink. Even if it’s bigger. I only have 2 hours to finish it, plus an extra 32 PZ before I have to stop putting something in my stomach.

Cat sits on her couch looking with dread at the two glasses in her hands.

Narration: My new strategy:
-Breathe deeply and hold it.
-Sip
-Swallow
-Bug glug of strong ginger beer.
-Shake it and swallow it.
-Exhale and repeat

Cat slams her empty 16-ounce glass and exclaims, “Fuck YES!”

Narration: It takes me 35 minutes, but I finish without nausea!

Title: 8 am

Narration: I promised the Internet more comics, but it’s all I can do to finish my extra liquids while looking at my phone.

Cat sits on his toilet looking exhausted and sick, holding a bottle of Gatorade in one hand and moving his phone in the other.

Subtitle: 9:25 am

Narration: I realize I only have 10 more minutes left to drink liquids, so I drink sparkling water for luck.

He drinks diligently from a can.

Caption: 11 a.m. – 12:15 p.m.

Narration: Once I can’t even drink liquids, I end up lying on the couch to forget my hunger.

Lying on the couch with a blanket over her, Cat’s stomach gurgles, “CHURRRR…”

Narration: Finally head to the appointment!

Dressed in her coat, Cat pumps her fist in the air with more mock confidence. Ron locks the door.

Narration: The actual procedure is an examination of your large intestine: your colon, rectum, and anus! Your doctor will use an endoscope, a long, flexible tube with a lighted camera on the end, to look inside these areas. You usually receive anesthesia for this, so you won’t notice anything.

A doctor is shown controlling an endoscope that snakes inside a diagram of the colon.

Wearing a cowboy hat, a small cat mounts an endoscopic camera tube inside a colon that has a pair of strange protuberances labeled “polyp.”

Cat: They’re looking for polyps. Small growths inside the colon that may or may not be cancerous. Your doctor will remove them immediately if he finds anything!

Subtitle: 13:45

Narration: Sign up and wait.

Cat and Ron sit in a waiting room, bored. A framed photograph of a big butt hangs on the wall.

Narration: Get ready:
-Clothes bag!
-Put on your robe!
-Start the IV!
-Let them take you to the procedure room!

Cat gives a thumbs up as she is wheeled into the procedure room on a stretcher.

Narration: PROCEDURE.JPG 404 FILE NOT FOUND

Caption: 3 p.m.

In the recovery room, there is a man next to Cat’s stretcher.

Doctor: Everything seemed great, no polyps! See you again in 10 years.

Cat: Good!

Subtitle: 3:45 pm

Narration: TIME FOR SPAGHETTI TO CARBONARA!

Cat voraciously devours a plate of pasta.

Narration: My verdict: Colorectal cancer is now the number one cause of cancer death* among young people. *jamanetwork.com/journals/jama/fullarticle/2844189

Cat: Personally, it would take me two days to feel sick before dying from something that can be easily prevented. Hopefully, after reading this, you’ll see that a colonoscopy is less scary than you thought! Get your butt checked and stay alive!
