Hien Pham draws in a lush style that alternates between realistic illustrations and simplified cartoons in textured pencil lines. Use the entire spectrum of colors.
Hien is a large, handsome, dark-skinned man with thinning hair tied in a bun and a full beard. He wears a white button-down shirt and nice navy blue pants, while both his tie and belt are made of intricately braided yellow shibari ropes.
Hien taps the head of his microphone with his finger, making a “bmph! bmph! bmph!” noise before addressing the audience from his spot on a stage with a giant freestanding “TIED” logo just off-center behind him. “Welcome everyone to my TIED Talk!” He announces. “I have a very exciting presentation for you today! Put your hands together for the official presentation of…MY LAST ROPE EXPERIMENT!”
The curtains in the background open to reveal a movie theater-sized screen with a close-up of his underwear-clad groin area. The red shibari ropes are intricately knotted and tied around the model’s waist, upper thighs and around the bulge of his penis and balls, creating the appearance of a lingerie garter set.

“Thanks to our Masturbateer, I will demonstrate how to put this bond together live on stage!” Hien enthusiastically informs the audience as his model takes the stage. The Masturbator is a large, middle-aged man with light brown skin, short curly black hair, and a well-trimmed beard and mustache. He wears the same white shirt as Hien but with a small pink bow tie, and instead of pants he only wears black boxers with black garters around his calves that hold up his white socks.

Narration: You can use any Shibari rope material, but I would recommend cotton, bamboo, or nylon for long-term use.
Illustrations show two bundles of red rope and 30 ft (~9 m) safety shears.
The following instructions are accompanied by drawings of each step.
1) Let’s start with a single column tie-down! Find the middle of your rope (the cove). Wrap the tail around your hip and pull it across the cove to create a lark’s head.
2) Reverse the tension, wrap it around the back of your hip, and then draw the tail through the new curve you just created.
3a) Save a small loop before passing the tail behind the waistband.
3b) Pass the tail through the loop and pull tight to create a half hitch!
Narration: Remember this single column lashing technique, as we will be using it again soon!
As Hien secures the rope around his model’s waist, he tells the audience, “This tie came about in preparation for a Tom of Finland-themed dance party where I had plans to make out with a friend. I don’t have much leather, but I thought I could style a look that would work with the theme of the party.”

Instructions:
4a) Flip the tail up to create a small loop.
4b) Pass part of the tail to create a new loop.
4c) Pull the top rope to tighten!
4d) Use your thumb and index finger to pull through more loops.
4e) Repeat to create a short chain stitch.
Kneeling on the floor, Hien tightens a knot on the model’s thigh as he explains, “I was drawn to the juxtaposition of leather-clad men standing around someone in a vaporized white dress shirt, no pants, nothing but sexy lingerie. Inspired, I wrote the first draft of this tie a few hours before that night!”
Instructions:
4f) Pull the tail through the final loop to lock the chain stitch.
5) Create a single column tie by first wrapping the tail around the back of your thigh, reverse the tension, wrap it, and then secure it with a half hitch.

6) Use a lark’s head to connect the second rope to the side of your thigh.
7a) Attach to the middle back of the waistband with a cross hook.
7b) Mirror that cross hitch to create a cow hitch!
8) Tie a single column around the other thigh.
The model and Hien in his cartoonish chibi form recline on the floor facing each other, as if they were gossiping at a sleepover.
“Unfortunately,” Hien admitted sheepishly. “The friend I was hoping to kiss didn’t make it to the party!!! Without that plan, I felt awkward and directionless… In the end, the Shibari lingerie stayed hidden in my pants for the rest of the night…”
Instructions:
9) Wrap it to the front and then direct the rope upward with a cross hitch.
10) Chain stitch to the waist.
11) Use a cross hitch to redirect the tail toward the front.
12) Redirect the rope downward using a cow hitch.
13) Split the tail and wrap it around the crotch towards the back.
14) Secure the tails to the back ropes with Cow Hitches!

The regularly drawn model presents her rope garters, turning to show both the front and back, as Hien’s voice narrates: “And there you have it! An intermediate Shibari lingerie built on fundamental knots that you can enhance and make your own!”
The audience illuminates the stage with the flashes of their cameras while taking photographs of the chibi-masturbator posing in front of them.
“Although this piece is inexplicably tied to a silly anecdote about my kiss that never was…” Chibi Hien admits with a smile. “I was so happy to be inspired to create something fun for someone I cared about.”
Hien and the Masturbator in their chibi forms strike enthusiastic poses as he concludes, “Thank you for coming to my TIED Talk! My name is Hien, and I’ll see you again next time I’m on the ropes!”
